7 Things You Need to Know About the New Snapchat Update

It was a big week for Snapchat this week! With over 100M daily users and 8B daily video views, Snapchat is not going away anytime soon!

Snapchat rolled out one of their biggest updates to date – Chat 2.0. Here are the juicy details on what you need to know!

  1. Snapchat stories auto-advance. This is a huge update! When you are watching someone’s Snap-Story, once it is over you will automatically be taken to the next Snap-Story of your Friends in the order of the last time they snapped. For me, I saw a 30% increase yesterday in how many people were watching my snaps and I think one of the big reasons is this auto-advance feature. You can still click through your friends and click on stories you are interested in – but I found that I am watching many more of my friend’s Snap-Stories with this feature. This feature is really going to increase views and engagement – which is a huge metric for any brand or business owner thinking about how they can best monitor and analyze Snapchat data. Also, with this feature you can swipe to the left to advance to the next Snap-Story.
  2. Video GIFs. You can send up to a 10 second video GIF to anyone privately – so basically you can react to their chat message with your face and audio (if they tap to enable audio.)
  3. Audio notes. You can send an audio note to someone – great if you are driving or didn’t do your hair and make-up and don’t want to be on camera. 🙂
  4. Video and audio calls. Is this a Skype killer? Perhaps! I’ve already set up a few calls using Snapchat. You can host a video or audio call directly through Snapchat!
  5. Upload photos within chat. You can now upload photos from your Camera roll into Chat – even during a live call!
  6. Fluid transition during chat. You can now switch the video, audio, text or graphics easily when you are chatting with someone. This is really the ultimate private chat experience!
  7. Stickers galore! Snapchat’s private chat feature has been completely re-hauled. You can now send up to 200 ‘stickers’ privately to others on Snapchat. Those of you familiar with Facebook Messenger will see lots of similarities here to the stickers available on Facebook Messenger.

BONUS update. This is not within just chat but any snap you take, you can now add more lines of text than before without having to use any “Snapchat hack” to do so. This is really helpful if you want to write more than just one line of text and include a link or call to action.

The best way to really understand all of these new features is to try them out yourself and get comfortable with how they work. A great place to start is by reaching out to either new Friends and introducing yourself, or use the new update to privately chat with some of your closest connections so you can both experiment with it together.

As I always like to say, the magic in social media is the one-to-one. When you can reach out to someone one-to-one to connect with them – this is where the relationship and the engagement happens.

If you are brand new to Snapchat like I know many of you are – I would love for you to check out my guide for newbies here. I am fairly new to Snapchat myself – but am really loving the uniqueness of this platform and how it fits into my overall social media strategy.

As I always say, you don’t have to be on every platform – and you don’t have to be all things to all people, but the clients and people I know who get a huge ROI from social media – are the ones that aren’t afraid to try something new and see if it’s a fit for them and their brand.

Click here to read my Snapchat Guide for Newbies and let me know what you think about the new update. Leave me a comment below or join us in our Facebook Group – we’d love to see you there!

P.S. If you are on Snapchat already – let’s connect. Here’s my Snapcode – on a mobile device, screen shot this image and then go into Snapchat and then add me as a friend by using my Snapcode. Questions? Post them below!
