There is No One-Size Fits All Social Media Plan

One of the questions I get asked all of the time is “If you could just do one thing – or just be on one social media platform, what would it be?” Basically, what is the quick fix. And the answer is there is no one-size fits all when it comes to social media strategy. There’s no one thing I can say, “If everybody just did this, it would make you a million dollars, get you 10,000 likes and a million hearts on Periscope.” So today, let’s dig a little deeper into that.

Ask yourself who is your ideal audience then make a plan to meet them where they are.

A lot of time when people think about social media plans, whether for individuals or for a company, there’s a tendency to think that there is one ultimate way to manage it. I’m very careful when I teach/coach/speak to come from a place of showing best practices of what other people are doing, and then have people come to the right decision of what works best for them.

It’s not enough to say, “What platform should I be on and how can I get more likes?” Rather, it’s about taking a step back and asking yourself:

  1. What? What do you really want to accomplish with your plan.
  2. Why? Why do you want to accomplish that with social media.

For example, I work with a lot of individuals and companies in the real estate industry. So I’ll get asked, “As a Realtor, what’s the #1 thing I should be doing in social media?” It really depends, what is it you want to accomplish?

  • Do you want to generate more business?
  • Gain new leads?
  • Build your brand?
  • Build your community?
  • Drive traffic to your website?
  • All of the above?

And then, you also want to think about your audience. Remember, you can’t be everything to everyone. You really want to hone in on who is your ideal audience/client/customer. Ask yourself who are the people that you naturally gravitate toward in social media. Male? Female? Your same age? Younger than you? Older than you? Different culture or language?

When you think about social media, there are so many different platforms and ways to connect that people get really overwhelmed. But where is your ideal audience? Here’s some information that may help.

Facebook. A large percentage of Facebook users, and the fastest growing demographic, are people over the age of 50. So if your ideal audience is Baby Boomers you definitely want to be there. With over a billion users and an incredible advertising system, Facebook is an amazing tool for social media.

Instagram. Are you trying to reach Millennials? Gen X’s or Gen Y’s? Well that’s the predominant demographic on Instagram.

Snapchat. The demographic is even younger. 18-24 year olds are a large portion of this platform’s users.

Twitter. Twitter tends to skew very male. Between 60-70% of all Twitter users are male – many of them being very tech savvy too.

Pinterest. Pinterest, on the other hand, is very female. 80% of Pinterest users are female – many of them mothers.

Finally, don’t forget that the other part of social media is YOU. You are the social in social media. Whatever approach you decide to take with your social media plan, it has to feel right for you. Focus on the platforms that you enjoy and you’ll have more success…not to mention more fun!
