The Truth About Facebook That You Don’t Want to Hear

Today, I’m going to share with you a couple things that are happening with Facebook that you may not really want to know.

Why is this important, first of all? Well, Facebook is changing, and what was true on Facebook a few years ago is definitely not true today. I know a lot of you have Facebook business pages. I also know that for a lot of you, your Facebook business page kind of looks like a little bit of a Facebook graveyard where you post something here and there, you post your listings or your open houses, or you post a link to an article, and then you get one or two likes, and one of them is your mom, and that’s about it.

There’s a couple things you really need to know…

Number one, it’s not about you.
It’s not about you. What I mean by that is one of the biggest things that you can do on Facebook that will make a really big difference and will give you a jump start on your Facebook personal profile, but especially on your business page, is to shine the light on other people.

Shine the light on other people. I’ll give you a quick example. I see this all the time on my Facebook news feed, but especially from my real estate friends. I’ll see things like, “Closed another one. Two more deals done today.” Well, imagine if you kind of flipped the script around a little bit and instead of shining it on you, you shined it on your clients, and you said something like, “This was such an amazing family to work with. I can’t wait to see what’s next with their journey. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Jones.” Do you see the difference? When you can shine the light on someone else, it’s a small thing that can make a really, really big difference.

We also see this a lot with brokerages who are doing this really well, where they’re shining the light back on their agents and they’re featuring their agents each and every week, or each and every month. Or, as an agent, of course you can shine the light on your clients, but you could also shine the light on other industries, other people in your local area, local businesses that you really love working with. Maybe it’s your local coffee shop, or your lender, or your stager. There’s so many people we work with day in and day out. Imagine if that became a big focus of what you do on Facebook. Less about you and more about other people.

The reason why that’s really valuable is when you shine the light on other people, first of all, you’re going to increase your engagement, which is the name of the game. Second of all, those people are more likely to share your post and share your content, because on Facebook, it’s one thing to like it. It’s another thing to comment. It’s a whole other thing for someone to share your content. So, shine the light on other people. It’s a small thing that makes a really big difference.

The second thing you may not want to hear but you’re always going to hear the truth from me, is that original content wins. Original content wins. If you want to get leads on Facebook, if you want to get traction on Facebook, you need to start thinking about original content. Now, I know that’s scary for a lot of people, because one of the best types of original content on Facebook right now is video, like what we’re doing right now. Recorded video is huge, followed very closely by Facebook Live.

Now, for a lot of us, we don’t like how we look or sound on video, and so then we don’t do video. But some of you have heard me say this before. I had a good friend a few years ago very lovingly say, “Katie, that’s how you look, and that’s how you sound, so you need to get over it.” So, I will lovingly tell you the same thing, because the agents and brokers that we see inside of our #GetSocialSmart Academy who are getting 40%, 50%, 60% of their business or more from Facebook, one of the number one things that they’re doing, aside from shining the light on other people, is that they’re putting out original content on a consistent basis.

I’m not talking about just promoting your listings. I’m talking about, what are the questions you get asked all the time? How can you bring value to people who you’re connected to on Facebook, on social media? So, quick videos like what we’re doing right here, we’ve been doing videos like this for the past two years, and it’s really helped in a big, big way by providing value and also, with Facebook, getting that engagement. That is really the name of the game. So, original content is a small thing that makes a big difference.

I know right now, that’s not the easy button. That’s not what you want to hear. It’s easier to say, “Oh, I’ll just hire someone to do it for me. I’ll just hire someone to post for me.” But I’m here to tell you, that’s not the right way, right? Because nobody can replace you.

Now, you can certainly add to your team. We’ve got an awesome video editor who’s editing this video right now as we speak, which is fantastic. We’ve got some great people on our team that help with some of the heavy lifting when it comes to marketing. But at the end of the day, who’s on camera? Me. Because when it comes to your Facebook, your social media, nobody can replace you, right? No one will say it like you. No one will have your nuance like you, and it’s a very small thing that makes a really big difference.
