Are you ready to rock your video over on Instagram? Today I’m going to share with you three awesome tips for making the most of your video content on Instagram.
Tip number one: optimize the cover of your videos. A lot of you may not realize this, but when you’re uploading video to Instagram, not Instagram stories, we’ll talk about that in a minute, but in your Instagram feed, when you’re uploading video into Instagram, you can actually choose the cover. Now, as of this recording, you can’t upload a thumbnail like you can on Facebook or YouTube, but what you can do is when you’re uploading a video into Instagram, what will happen is you’ll see a little slider at the bottom, and you can actually choose which frame is the best.
So the mistake a lot of folks make is they upload their video directly into Instagram, they don’t change the cover and so then the cover just becomes like this awkward still of yourself or a blank screen or something like that, so you can actually slide it over, find the perfect cover that you want it to be, and then of course you can type your caption, put your hashtags in and get that posted. That little thing makes a huge difference because remember, that’s the thumbnail people are going to see in the newsfeed. So optimize your cover, that’s tip number one.
Tip number two is make sure that you’ve got a call to action at the end of your videos. So on Instagram, you’re allowed up to a one minute video. A lot of the videos we put up on Instagram are typically anywhere between 40 seconds, 50 seconds, sometimes we go right up to a minute, but if you look at the end of every one of our Instagram videos, there’s a little message at the end that says, “Click the link on the bio to see our full video.” Because our videos are typically two, or three or four, maybe even five minutes, and so we’ll create a little snippet that we put up on Instagram and then we’ve got the link in our bio and we’ve got that call to action at the end within the video. We’ll also put that in the caption, when we’re writing the caption for the video, we’ll also put that in there that they can click the link in the bio to watch the full video.
We found that Instagram is a great way to dive traffic to our YouTube channel as well as our website, and so having that call to action at the end of every single video is really, really key. Tell people what you want them to do and make it really simple, really clear.
Tip number three is use Instagram Stories. I can’t talk about Instagram video and not talk about Instagram stories. Instagram Stories is blowing up. I have been spending a ton of time in Instagram Stories, and with Instagram Stories, you can create a quick photo or a 15 second video and that Instagram Story lasts on your profile for 24 hours. You can pull some of that content into Instagram highlights as we’ve talked about in other videos, but you’ve got to be using Instagram Stories. One of the apps that we’re using to create Instagram Stories every day is an app called Storeo. And I’ve talked about Storeo on some of my previous videos here at the #GetSocialSmart show, but I really like Storeo, because what I can do is I can open up Storeo and I can shoot a 45 second video, one minute video, one minute 15 second video, whatever it is, I can shoot it all at once and when I save it, Storeo saves it to my phone in 15 second slices, which is awesome. So then I can do a quick video, and then I can go back on Instagram and upload it in my stories one at a time, quickly and easily.
Now, you can do that through Instagram where you’re creating quick 15 second videos and stopping and starting and stopping and starting, but by using an app like Storeo, you’re going to get that fluidity that you don’t necessarily get just with Instagram. So that’s a really fun tool, it is a paid tool, but I love it, I use it a lot. And one of the ways that I use that tool is I use it as a way to share a quick tip of a quick question of the day over on Instagram. It’s something we’ve been doing for the past few months and it’s really helped us build our Instagram profile and just really build our engagement over there. So I would encourage you to think about what is one tip, one question, what’s something that you can share each and every day in a quick video, that’s a great piece of content that you can put up on your Instagram Stories.
As always, I would love to hear from you. What questions do you have when it comes to Instagram and by the way, we have a whole course about Instagram that we released fairly recently. It’s so awesome, I know I’m a little biased, but I would love for you to check it out, if you’re curious about Instagram Ads and Stories and everything we’re talking about. I’d also love to hear from you if you are on Instagram, and if you are, drop your Instagram handle in the comments below, let’s make sure we connect over on Instagram!
