I know how it is: we don’t like how we look, we don’t like how we sound, we’re not sure how to edit it right…then we don’t do it. Can I get real here?
In 2018, when we think about how to really make the most of social media, it’s not about just posting links. It’s not about just posting for the sake of posting. You have to really showcase what it feels like to work with you. One of the best ways to do that is through video, whether it’s recorded video like this or whether it’s through Facebook Live or any other kind of live broadcasting tool.
How do you get over that fear? Well, let me just be real with all of you. A few years ago when a good friend of mine very candidly and lovingly said, “Katie, that’s how you look and that’s how you sound, so you got to get over it.” I’m going to give you that same advice. That’s how you look, that’s how you sound, you kind of got to get over it a little bit.
The more you create video, the easier it gets. I don’t know if I ever get completely comfortable with looking at myself in the camera, but I will say the more you do it, the better you get and the better traction you’re going to get with video.
I would recommend just doing it. Nike said it right. Just do it.
Create video in an environment that you are most comfortable in. For me, to be honest with you, I am most comfortable when I am in my office, as you see right here. I’m not out and about. I personally am not always comfortable being on video as I’m out and about. I have done a lot of video like that, but I am most comfortable when I’m right here. Find your happy place. Find your happy zone where you are most comfortable. For a lot of you, it’s going to be with the door closed, where you’re in a place where you can just do what you’re going to do, with out a lot of people watching.
You don’t have to do it all yourself. I feel very fortunate. We found an amazing video editor who works with us on a freelance basis and there are so many great video editors that are out there. She’s watching this right now. She’s editing this. She’s making me look extra great which is always awesome.
I’m sharing this with you because I realized about a year or so ago, that I like what video accomplished for me in my business. It generated more business. It generated more leads. It helped connect me with my community. Editing video for me, just wasn’t what I really wanted to spend my time and energy on.
Now, that might change as we enter into the next few months. We’ll see how that goes. I have found working with somebody who can help with some of the heavy lifting makes a big, big difference.
Look in your local community. Look online. Ask your friends. They might have a great connection for someone who can help you with some of this heavy lifting when it comes to video. At the end of the day, just do it. Get over it. Dive in and video again is one of the best places to really showcase what it feels like to work with you. There’s something really powerful about hearing and seeing, and it makes a huge, huge difference.
I’d love to hear from you. Are you doing video? If you’re doing some video, I would love to see some of the video that you’re creating for your business, so drop some links in the comments below. Maybe they’re your YouTube links. Maybe they’re your Facebook links. Whatever they are, I’d love to hear from you, what you’re doing with videos. Drop those in the comments below.
