Today I’m going to share with you some of the biggest mistakes I see happening on Facebook.
All right, mistake number one, using your personal profile completely for business. A lot of you know this, but it’s against Facebook’s terms of service to use your personal profile completely for business. I’m a big believer in the 80/20 rule. 80% of what you post on your personal profile should be personal. Your family, your friends, your hobbies, your interests, your passions.
The other 20% can be business related. That doesn’t mean that this is a blatant opportunity for you to sell, sell, sell, but I love to use that 20% to really share my wins. To share why I love what I do. I might post a picture with my client. I might post a picture of my travels. I might post a picture of something that I’m really excited about when it comes to my business. And periodically, I might go to my business page and share something from my business page to my personal profile, but make sure you’re not doing that each and every time you post, which is another mistake I see happening all the time.
So, often I see people posting on their business page and then sharing that exact same content to their personal profile. You really want to pick and choose. I like to do it maybe once a week, a couple times a month but you want to be careful with that. That’s a big mistake I see happening on Facebook and that really leads me to the next big mistake I see, and that is sell, sell, sell.
Social media is not a one-way street. It’s a two-way street. Can you sell on social media? Yes and no. You want to be careful about how you think about selling. One of the best ways to sell on social media is to invest in Facebook ads. Facebook ads right now in 2017, 2018 when done right can generate business, can generate leads. They can help build your email newsletter. They can turn into business, do lots of great things for you.
If you’re really going to sell, if you’ve got something that you really want to promote in terms of your business, invest on Facebook ads, it’s one of the best ways to do that.
Another mistake that I see happen all the time are people not taking advantage of video. A lot of times I go to a real estate agent or broker’s Facebook business page and I see some content that they’ve shared and pictures, but I have no idea what they sound like, what they look like, or what their opinion is. If you’re not doing video, you are missing out on a huge opportunity. Right now it’s harder than ever to really get that organic reach on Facebook, that free reach so to speak, and one of the best ways to improve that is by doing video or Facebook Live. Don’t miss out, make sure you’re doing that.
The last big mistake I see happening on Facebook all the time, and this is kind of a no brainer but, the basic thing is that it’s really hard to find a lot of you. To be honest with you, a lot of times I go to your Facebook personal profile and maybe we’re not friends yet and you’ve got your personal profile so locked down, I have no idea where you work, who you are, or anything about you.
Make sure on Facebook on your personal profile that you have the fact that you’ve got your company and you’ve got your profession. If you’re an agent, if you’re a broker, whatever your business is, make sure you’ve got that listed in your personal profile and make sure that it’s open to the public. When you go in to edit your personal profile, each section you can indicate if you want that showable to your friends or to the public.
I would recommend having your profession, having your city, having your website, having your email, having all of that be public. That way if someone wants to find you and contact you, they don’t necessarily need to friend you, but if they need to contact you, you want to make it easy for them. I’d also mention that if you have a Facebook business page, make sure you’ve got your contact information on there as well.
Those are just a few simple mistakes I see happening all the time. I’m sure you see more as well. I’d love to hear from you. What are some of the biggest mistakes you see people and small business owners, realtors, brokers, what are they doing wrong on Facebook? Leave me a comment below.
