Crush Your Content Strategy With This Secret Weapon

Today I want to share with you my “secret weapon” when it comes to content strategy. As much as I love social media, you really can’t talk about social media without having a content strategy. They’re almost like kissing cousins – you can’t talk about one without the other.

Have you ever put together a content strategy for yourself or your business? If you’ve never put one together before, or even if you have, I think this tool is going to be really helpful for you. One of the things I always say about content is that if you don’t have a content strategy, it’s like throwing a bunch of things against a wall and just hoping that they’re going to stick. That’s the method that a lot of people have when it comes to social media. But I will tell you from first-hand experience, from my own social media strategy as well as working with a variety of different companies both large and small, that the biggest differential between those making money and generating leads with social media and those who aren’t is strategy. Most importantly, a content strategy.

Now, a content strategy is a little bit different from a social media strategy. A content strategy is really thinking through what your brand is all about. Your brand is so much more than just your logo or the colors on your website. Your brand is really what people say about you when you’re not in the room – and it’s all of the different ways that it feels like to work with you. So when you think about your content strategy and telling your story in a very noisy world, start by thinking about what are different topics that are relevant to your brand.

A few years ago I developed a concept I call the content grid. I created this because of my own needs at the time. I was the Social Media Director working for Inman News and I needed a way to think about content, how to organize content and to think beyond today. I knew if I needed this tool that others needed it too.
